A hard cover for work that matters

Hardback binding adds rigid boards and a stronger spine, making a book that will last for many years on a shelf. People come to us for hardbound dissertations and PhD theses, family histories, company records, wedding albums, memorial books and small runs of commemorative titles.

Theses and dissertations

Many universities have exact requirements for hardbound submissions, which may cover the colour of the cover, the wording on the spine, the page margins and the type of paper. Read your department's handbook before you print, and bring it along if you are not sure. Things to check:

  • Spine wording: usually your name, degree and year, in a particular order.
  • Single or double sided: rules vary by university.
  • Margin: binding uses up space on the spine side, so allow a wider inner margin, typically around 30 to 40 mm.
  • How many copies: departments, supervisors and families often all want one.

Our dissertation checklist walks you through the points that catch people out. For a soft-bound draft, comb binding is cheaper and quicker to get done.

Cover options

Traditional bindings have a plain cloth or leather-look cover with gold or silver lettering on the front and spine, which is a good fit for academic submissions. A printed cover is a better choice for photo books, family histories and short-run company books, where you want a full-colour image wrapped around the boards. Tell us what you have in mind, and we will show you what can be done.

Page counts and paper

The boards are stiff, but the pages are still the part that gets read, so choose them well. A good-quality uncoated paper of 100 to 120gsm feels more substantial than plain office paper. If you are printing photos, ask about a silk or gloss paper, which will show pictures with more depth. Very short documents can look odd in hardback, as the book needs some bulk to look right. Ask us if yours is under about 40 pages.

Timing

Hardback binding is a slower process than other methods, because of the case-making and drying. Please do not leave it until the morning of a submission deadline. Tell us when you need the book, and we will give you a realistic date. If you have only just finished your thesis, get in touch early and bring your file so that we can check it, as deadlines cluster around the same few weeks every year.

Getting started

Bring your PDF or send it on WhatsApp, along with your cover wording and any university guidance. We will check the wording with you carefully before binding, since it can't be changed afterwards. If you need a layout or a cover design for a family or company book, we can set it up free of charge when we print it.

Questions we hear about hardback binding

Can you bind my PhD thesis or dissertation in hardback?

Yes. Bring your university's binding rules so that we can follow the colour, spine wording and margin requirements.

How long does hardback binding take?

Longer than other binding methods, because of case-making and drying. Tell us your deadline as early as you can.

Can I have my name in gold on the spine?

Gold or silver lettering is a common choice. Tell us your exact wording and we will confirm it before binding.

Can you make one single hardback book?

Yes. Single copies are common for theses, memorial books and special gifts.
