Why pens still work

Pens get picked up, used and passed along. Many a pen with a dentist's or estate agent's name on it has spent years in a kitchen drawer doing quiet advertising work. They are inexpensive and easy to give away, and they are small enough to pop in a parcel, a welcome pack or on a reception desk.

Types of pen

• Plastic click pens are the budget standard for mass giveaways.
• Stick pens are the cheapest of all, and good for events.
• Metal ballpoints feel more substantial, and work well for clients and corporate packs.
• Recycled or eco pens are made from recycled plastic, card or similar materials.
• Stylus pens have a soft tip for touchscreens.
• Highlighters and pencils can also be branded for schools and conferences.

Print area and design

The print area on a pen is very small. Typically, it is around 40 x 8 mm on the barrel or clip. That is enough for a logo and a short web address, or for a phone number. It is not the place for a list of services. Check that small type is still legible, and stick to a bold font. Most low-cost pens are printed in one or two colours, while full-colour wraps and engraving are available on some models. Engraving on metal pens gives a subtle, permanent finish.

Choosing the ink colour

Black or blue ink is the safest option for general office use, especially for signing documents. Some colours are less readable or are unsuitable for forms. Check the ink before ordering, and test a sample for smooth writing if you are ordering a large number.

Quantities and minimums

Pens are generally ordered in larger quantities, as the set-up costs make very small runs expensive. A minimum order is common, and it may vary with the style. As you add more, the cost per pen drops quickly. Tell us your budget and we will suggest a few options.

Ordering

Send your logo or text, and tell us which colours and how many you would like. We set up artwork free of charge when we print the job, and we will show a proof of how the design will look on the pen. Pens are usually made to order, so please allow time ahead of a conference or a mailing. A set of notebooks and pens makes a neat welcome gift.
