A printed mug is one of the most popular gifts for a reason: it is inexpensive, useful and it gets seen every day. How a printed mug is made
Most personalised ceramic mugs are made using dye sublimation, where the design is printed on a transfer and heat-pressed into a special coating on the mug. It can reproduce photographs and full-colour designs well. Colours can look slightly different from those on your phone or computer, and very dark photographs can lose some detail. A bright image with a clear subject tends to work best.
Preparing your photo or logo
- Use the original photo, not a screenshot or a version sent through a messaging app.
- Choose a landscape or square image. The printed area on a standard 11oz mug is usually about 20 x 8 cm, which wraps around the mug.
- Keep faces away from the handle area, and check that key elements appear where you want them.
- For a logo, send a vector or high-resolution PNG.

Availability varies, so tell us what you are looking for. Travel mugs and insulated bottles often use a different print method than a standard mug.
Care
Sublimated mugs are durable, but hand-washing helps to keep the print looking its best. Dishwasher resistance depends on the mug, so check before you buy if this matters to you. Avoid abrasive pads, and be careful in a microwave if a mug has any metallic detail.
How quickly can you print a mug?
A single mug from a ready photo is a quick job, and same-day printing is often possible if you contact us early. Check with us on 020 8133 4499 before you travel. Can you print just one mug?
Yes. One-offs are welcome and are the most common order for gifts.
Can you print a photo on a mug?
Yes. Send the original image rather than a screenshot, and pick a bright, clear picture for the best result.
Are printed mugs dishwasher safe?
It depends on the mug, so tell us if you need this. Hand-washing will always keep the print looking its best for longer.
Can you print a mug the same day?
Often, for a single mug with a ready image. Call us first to check, especially at busy times like Christmas.
Can you print around the whole mug?
Most designs can wrap around most of the mug, leaving a small gap near the handle. We will show you a preview.
