Long-life aluminium signs

Dibond is a composite board with thin aluminium sheets either side of a plastic core. It is flat, rigid and much lighter than solid metal, and it copes well with the weather. If a sign will stay outdoors for years, on a shop front, a car park wall or an office entrance, this is often the right material.

Common uses

  • Shop fascia panels and projecting signs
  • Building and office entrance signs
  • Car park, directional and safety signage
  • House names, gate and block signs
  • Display prints that have a smart, flat, gallery-style finish

Thickness and fixing

Standard thickness is 3 mm, which gives a good balance of rigidity and weight. Larger panels may need to be fixed to a frame or a batten to stop them from flexing. Good fixing options include:

  • Stand-off fixings for a neat, premium look on walls
  • Screws through drilled holes for straightforward fitting
  • Rails or a frame for large shop signs
  • Exterior-grade sticky tape or adhesive, on suitable clean surfaces

We can pre-drill holes where you need them. If your sign must align with a shop front or existing fittings, measure carefully, since a 3 mm panel cannot easily be trimmed on site without the right tools.

Protecting the print

Direct sun and weather eventually affect any print. Lamination adds a protective layer and helps to resist fading and scratches, so we recommend it for signs meant to last. It also makes graffiti and dirt easier to clean off. Colour choice matters too: strong blacks and blues generally hold up better than bright reds and yellows over the years.

How it compares

Correx is the budget option for temporary signs, and Foamex is the smooth, low-cost choice for indoor use. Dibond costs more than either, but it often works out cheaper in the end if it saves you replacing a sign every year.

Planning a shop sign

Your landlord may have rules on signage, and some shop signs and illuminated signs need advertisement consent from the council. Our guide to pavement sign rules covers some of the ground for shops. We print and supply signs, and we can advise you on fixing, but you will usually need a competent installer for anything high up or over a public footway.

Ordering

Give us your measurements, plus any logo or lettering. We can set up the artwork free of charge when we print and show you a proof before we go ahead. Exterior signs are worth getting right, so we suggest printing out a scaled draft or holding up a paper mock-up before you approve.

Questions we hear about dibond aluminium boards

What is Dibond?

Dibond is a composite board with aluminium faces around a plastic core. It is light, rigid and suitable for long-term outdoor signs.

How long do aluminium signs last?

Often many years with good fixing and lamination. Exposure to sun will eventually affect the print, and bright colours fade first.

Can you install the sign for me?

We print and supply signs and can advise you on fixings. Anything at height should be fitted by a suitably experienced installer.

Do you drill fixing holes?

Yes. Tell us where you want them, or ask us for stand-off fixings for a cleaner look.
