Lightweight foam board prints

Foam board is a layer of foam between two smooth outer sheets. It is very light, stiff enough to stand up on its own with a little support, and gives a crisp surface for photographs and fine text. It is the go-to choice for presentations, trade show panels, wedding seating plans, shop displays and property or planning consultations.

Good uses

  • Pitches and presentations: a board carries well and looks more professional than a poster taped to a wall.
  • Weddings and parties: welcome signs and table plans on an easel.
  • Exhibition and gallery work: mounting a print on foam board makes it flat and easy to hang.
  • Point of sale: temporary displays and in-store offers.
  • Student and research work: boards for degree shows and presentations.

What to avoid

Foam board is for indoor, short-term use. Corners dent if knocked, and the edges can get damaged in transport. Damp can make the surface warp or peel away. If you need something tougher, choose Foamex for long-term indoor use, or Correx for outdoors.

Sizes and thickness

Boards can be cut to any size, including A3, A2, A1 and A0, and thicknesses of 5 mm are typical. Very large panels bow if unsupported, so ask for advice if yours is bigger than A0. To stand on a table or an easel, a strut or a display stand can help, and picture hooks or sticky pads work for walls. Heavy-duty double-sided tape can lift a poster's surface, so use mounting pads that are suited to the wall.

Mounting a poster you already have

We can also mount a poster you already own, depending on its condition. If it has fold lines, they will show even once mounted, so bring it in for us to look at. For prints you are about to order, mounting right after printing gives the flattest result.

Foam board or Foamex: are they different?

The words are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Foam board has a soft foam core and a paper or card-like face. Foamex is a harder, heavier PVC foam sheet. If you are ordering online elsewhere, check which one is meant. For a display you plan to reuse, it is usually worth paying a little more for Foamex.

Ordering

Send a PDF with 3 mm of bleed at the size you want, or send your text and images for us to lay out free of charge when we print. Small boards with ready files can often be printed quickly. Tell us your date and we will let you know if same-day is possible.

Questions we hear about foam boards

What is foam board used for?

Indoor displays, presentations, exhibition panels and wedding signs. It is very light and gives a smooth, sharp print.

Can foam board be used outdoors?

It is not recommended, as damp can make it warp. Correx or Dibond are much better choices outdoors.

Can you mount my existing poster on foam board?

Often, yes. Bring it in so we can check its condition, as creases and fold lines will still show.

Is foam board the same as Foamex?

No. Foam board has a soft core with a smooth facing, while Foamex is a harder, more durable PVC foam sheet.
