Hard to miss

A sky tube, also known as an air dancer or a sky dancer, is a tall fabric tube that a fan keeps in constant motion. You have probably seen one at a car dealership or a shop opening. It is one of the most attention-grabbing things you can put outside, and is often used for grand openings, car sales, gyms, fairs and big summer sales.

How they work

An electric blower sits at the base and pushes air up through the tube, which makes it wave around in an unpredictable way. Heights commonly range from about 3 to 6 metres. Many come with one or two legs, and arms or a body shape that can be customised. You need a safe power supply for the fan, usually from a standard socket. A long extension cable must be suitable for outdoor use and must be protected from water and trip hazards.

Branding your tube

Lettering usually runs vertically down the tube, so short words work best, such as "Sale", "Open" or a brand name. Printing can use your colours and a large logo, but the constant movement makes fine details impossible to read. Strong contrasts such as yellow and black or white and red tend to work well. Because the whole thing is moving, a small logo will not be seen, so choose a big, simple design.

Safety and permission

Sky tubes need open space, and they should be kept away from overhead cables, roads and doors. Check with your landlord, venue or council. Because of their movement, some areas may have restrictions near busy roads, as they could distract drivers. Do not run them in high winds or heavy rain, and do not leave one running unattended if there is a risk it may be damaged or tampered with. Fans get hot, so keep them dry and well ventilated, and do not let anything block the intake.

Is it right for your business?

Sky tubes work best when you need to be noticed for a short time and you have the space, such as an opening day or a car sales weekend. For a neat, long-term presence on a shop front, a PVC banner or a feather flag is usually better. If you are not sure, tell us about your site and we can talk through the alternatives.

Ordering

Tell us the height, the colour and the wording you want, and we will quote for a printed tube, with or without a blower. Artwork is set up free of charge when we print. These items are made to order, so please allow time before your opening day. We deliver to addresses across the UK for a quoted charge.

Questions we hear about sky tubes

What is a sky tube?

A tall fabric tube kept moving by an electric fan at its base. It is also known as an air dancer or a sky dancer.

What power does a sky tube need?

Usually a standard mains supply for the fan. Use an outdoor-rated cable, and check the blower's specification before your event.

Can sky tubes be used in the rain?

It is best not to. Water and electrics are a risk, so bring the blower in during heavy rain and strong wind.

Can you print my logo on it?

Yes. Bold words and large logos work best because the tube is constantly moving.
