A message that can't be missed
A door hanger sits right on the handle, so it has to be picked up. Hotels use them for "do not disturb" and breakfast orders. Businesses use them as a marketing tool, and they work particularly well where a letterbox is out of reach or full of junk mail. Estate agents, takeaways, gardeners, cleaning companies and election candidates all use them too.
Common uses
- Hotels and guest houses: privacy, room-service and housekeeping signs
- Estate agents: "we are selling a home on your street" messages
- Trades: "we were in your road today" with an offer
- Takeaways: menu offers on estates or flats
- Delivery services: "sorry we missed you" messages
- Student housing and offices: notices, or a fun "do not disturb" for a dorm room or gift
Size and card
A common size is about 100 x 210 mm, or DL, with a pre-cut hole and a slit so it can go over a handle. Choose card of at least 250 to 350gsm, so that it hangs properly and does not bend. Lamination gives a hanger a longer life, particularly for hotels, where it will be used repeatedly. Marketing hangers can be left uncoated, particularly if you want to write a personal note. Hotel hangers may be double sided, for example with "please clean my room" on the reverse.
Design tips
Put the most important message high on the hanger, near the hook, because it will be seen first. Keep it short, and use a strong headline. Avoid putting important text around the die-cut hole, and allow a margin of at least 5 mm to the edge. If you use them for a door-to-door campaign, include a code or a QR link, so you can see how many responded. Check how the hanger looks on a real door before you print a large batch.
Rules and courtesy
Door hangers count as unsolicited promotional material, so respect any "no junk mail" signs and do not enter private buildings without permission. Some estates and blocks of flats have rules about this. Be careful of leaving things on the doors of empty homes, which may advertise that nobody is in. Any marketing must comply with the advertising code, particularly when it makes offers or claims.
Ordering
Send your artwork or wording, tell us the quantity and whether you want one side or two, and we will quote. We set up the artwork free of charge when we print and show you a proof that includes the cut shape. Short runs of hangers can often be turned around quickly, although die-cutting can add some time. Questions we hear about door hangers
What size is a standard door hanger?
Often about 100 x 210 mm, with a hole and slit at the top. Other sizes can be made to order.
What card should I use for a door hanger?
At least 250 to 350gsm. Add lamination for hotels, where hangers are used repeatedly.
Can you print a different message on each side?
Yes. Hotel hangers often have "do not disturb" on one side and "please clean my room" on the other.
Do door hangers work for marketing?
They can do, particularly in flats or areas with lots of junk mail. A small test run with a tracking code will tell you.
