A small piece of print with a big job
A key card holder keeps a guest's room card safe and gives them everything they need in one place. They are used by hotels, B&Bs, serviced apartments and student housing. A good one reduces repeat questions at the front desk, and it reminds the guest of your brand when they get home.
What to include
- A space to write the room number, ideally not next to the hotel name, for security
- The Wi-Fi network and password (or a place to write them)
- Breakfast times and checkout time
- Front desk number or phone extension
- Your website, for repeat bookings
- A QR code to a digital guest guide
- A local map or a list of recommended restaurants
Security
Never print a room number on the outside of the holder in a way that links it to the hotel name, and do not write it on the key card itself. If a guest loses both, anyone could find their way to the room. A plain interior flap that is written on by hand is a simple, inexpensive way to do this. Make sure staff understand the idea, too.
Size and format
Most holders are folded card with a pocket, sized to fit a standard card of about 86 x 54 mm. They typically measure around 90 x 60 mm when closed. Choose a card of around 250 to 350gsm, so it does not tear, and consider an uncoated inner surface to take a ballpoint pen. A gloss or matt laminate outside makes it look smart. A slot or a tab keeps the card from falling out, so check this with your own cards.
Using them for marketing
Local restaurants, attractions and taxi firms may pay to advertise on your key card holders, which helps with the cost. A voucher for your own restaurant or bar can bring guests in, and a discount code for a direct booking can encourage repeat stays without paying commission. Keep offers up to date, or leave them out of the print and use a QR code to a page you can change at any time.
Ordering
Send your design, your wording and the quantity. If your hotel has a brand guide, please send it too. We set up artwork free of charge when we print the job, and we will show you a proof, including the fold and the pocket. Die-cut holders can take a little longer. For an order that matches your rooms, we can also print door hangers, table talkers and menus.
Questions we hear about hotel key card holders
What size is a key card holder?
Usually about 90 x 60 mm when closed, to fit a standard 86 x 54 mm key card.
Should the room number be printed on the holder?
Not next to the hotel's name. Leave a space on an inside flap to write it in by hand, for security.
Can I write on the holders?
Yes, on uncoated inner surfaces, which take ballpoint well. Tell us if you need this.
Can you print a map on the holder?
Yes. A small local map or recommended places can be printed inside, or linked with a QR code.
