A small keepsake to hold on to
A memorial bookmark is an easy thing to keep, tucked into a Bible, a diary or a favourite book. Many families give them out at a funeral or memorial service, alongside or instead of an order of service. They also work well for later anniversaries, for prayer groups, and for relatives who could not be there on the day.
What to include
- A favourite photograph
- Full name, and dates of birth and death
- A short verse, prayer, poem or a favourite saying
- Optional: a line such as "Always in our hearts", or the family's thanks
Space is limited, so a few lines usually work best. If you are stuck for words, a line from a song they loved, or something they often said, can be more personal than a traditional verse. Keep any religious verse in the version your family uses, and check spellings of names, particularly in other languages.
Size and materials
A common bookmark size is around 50 x 150 mm or 55 x 210 mm. Card of 300gsm or more feels substantial and will stand up to years of use. Lamination protects it against handling and adds a sense of permanence. You can also choose to add a punched hole and a ribbon, for a traditional finish. If you plan to give them out with a booklet, make sure they fit inside it.
Using a portrait photo
Bookmarks are tall and narrow, which suits a head-and-shoulders portrait better than a wide group photo. If your favourite picture is of a group, we can often crop it to focus on one person, though this needs a reasonably good original. Bring in printed photos if you do not have a digital copy, and we will scan them and hand them straight back to you.
Religious and cultural traditions
Families from many backgrounds use memorial cards and bookmarks, and each has its own traditions. Tell us about any symbols, scripts or wording you would like. Please check any text in a language other than English yourself, or ask a family member or a faith leader to help, as we will print exactly what you approve.
How many to order?
Consider the same number as your orders of service, or one per household, and then add a few for family members and later use. A small reprint can be made later, as we keep the file for you on request.
Ordering
Send a photo, the wording and the date you need them. We will lay out the bookmark free of charge when we print, and show you a proof. Bookmarks can often be printed quickly, though lamination and ribbons add a little time. Phone 020 8133 4499 if a funeral is close, and we will tell you what is possible.
