Cards to remember someone by
A memorial card, sometimes called an in memoriam card or a prayer card, is a small printed tribute with a photograph, dates and a verse. It may be handed out at a funeral or a memorial service, sent to those who could not attend, or sent out a year later to mark an anniversary. Traditions differ, so we are happy to talk about what would suit your family.
Types of memorial card
- Wallet cards are about the size of a business card and fit in a purse or wallet.
- Flat cards are A6 or similar, with a photo on the front and words on the back.
- Folded cards have room for a photograph, a longer verse, and a thank-you message.
- Prayer cards have a religious image or a prayer, with the person's details on the reverse.
- Anniversary cards are sent or shared some time after the death, and may mention a Mass, a service or a gathering.
What to include
Traditionally, memorial cards show the person's full name, the dates of birth and death, their age, and a verse or prayer. You might also want to include:
- A nickname or the name they were known by
- A message from the family
- A note of the funeral date or an anniversary service
- A charity for donations
Use wording that feels natural. A simple sentence like "Remembered with love by all the family" is often all that is needed.
Photos and finish
A clear head-and-shoulders photo works well, especially at wallet size. If the only photograph you have is a group picture, we can often crop it. Old photos can be scanned in store if you bring them in. Choose a matt or uncoated card for a gentle look, or a laminate for a card that will be carried in a wallet for years.
Memorial cards or orders of service?
An order of service is a guide to the service itself, with its readings and music. A memorial card is a smaller keepsake, and it can be used before, during or long after the service. Some families choose both, while others give out a card and a memorial bookmark instead. A small card can be a good choice if you are holding a very small funeral, or if you are writing to people who live far away.
How many?
For a funeral, think about how many people will attend, then add some for those who cannot be there. For an anniversary, one per household is often enough. If you need envelopes to post them, we can provide those too, and for thanking people afterwards we also print thank you cards.
Ordering
Send the wording and a photograph, or come in and we will go through it with you. We will lay it out free of charge when we print and show you a proof to check. Simple cards can often be printed quickly, so phone us with your date if time is short. We will always be open with you about what is realistic.
