A warm first impression
A welcome sign tells guests they are in the right place, sets the tone of your event, and makes a great photo. It is usually placed on an easel at the entrance to a ceremony or reception, and it is one of the simplest ways of tying your stationery to the venue. We print them for weddings, christenings, birthdays and corporate events.
What to put on a sign
A simple layout usually works best:
- "Welcome to the wedding of"
- The couple's names, in the largest text
- The date, and possibly the venue
- Optional: a hashtag, "unplugged ceremony" note or a short message
Save the bulk of the details for the order of service or the table plan. Keep the wording short enough to read from several metres as guests arrive.
Sizes
| Size | Good for |
|---|---|
| A2 (420 x 594 mm) | Smaller rooms, or tables |
| A1 (594 x 841 mm) | The most common size, on an easel |
| A0 (841 x 1189 mm) | Large rooms, and a strong photo moment |
| Custom | Mirrors, arches and frames |
Materials
| Material | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Foam board | Indoor, light and low-cost | Dents if knocked and dislikes damp |
| Foamex | Smooth and more durable | Good for keepsakes |
| Correx | Outdoor weddings | Waterproof, but a slightly fluted surface |
| Vinyl on a mirror or perspex | Bold, modern look | Ask us about applying to your own mirror |
For a garden or marquee, go for something that resists damp, and make sure it is weighed down. Foam board can warp in humid conditions.
Easels, transport and timing
Check whether your venue can supply an easel. If it cannot, a simple wooden or metal easel is easy to find, though large boards may need a sturdier one. A1 and A0 boards do not fit in small cars when laid flat, so measure your boot before you order. Keep the sign in a bag or wrapped when you transport it, so that the corners and face are protected.
Design and proofs
Use your invitation design so everything feels connected. Bold, simple text is best, particularly if the sign will be viewed from a distance. Check your names and the date with special care, and approve the proof only when you are completely sure. Artwork is set up free of charge when we print, and a sign can often be turned around quite quickly, though please don't leave it until the day before.
Questions we hear about welcome signs
What size should a wedding welcome sign be?
A1 is the most popular for use on an easel. Choose A0 for a large venue or a strong photo moment.
What material is best?
Foam board is light and affordable indoors. Foamex is more durable, while Correx suits outdoor weddings.
Can you supply an easel?
Ask your venue first, as many have one. Otherwise, tell us and we can help you find something suitable.
Can you match my invitations?
Yes. Send us your invitation design and we will use the same fonts, colours and style.
