Take your logo out the door
A branded coffee cup is an advert that a customer carries down the street, usually past other potential customers. Independent cafes, bakeries, street food traders and corporate events use them to look established and to help people remember the name of the shop they just visited.
Types of cup
| Cup | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single wall paper | Cold drinks and hot drinks with a sleeve | Most economical |
| Double wall | Hot drinks, no sleeve needed | Better insulation and feel |
| Ripple wall | Hot drinks, with a textured grip | Premium look |
| Reusable plastic | Events and festivals | Often a deposit scheme |
| Reusable bamboo or travel mug | Sell to loyal customers | See mugs for ideas |
Common hot-drink sizes are 8oz, 12oz and 16oz. Choose lids that fit your cups, and check that your chosen size matches your coffee machine's height and your usual measures. Test a sample, as cups are not all the same.
Minimum orders
Fully printed cups are manufactured in batches, which means there are usually quite high minimum order quantities, often in the thousands. Storage is another consideration, because cups take up lots of space. For a small cafe, a cost-effective alternative is to buy plain cups and use a custom round sticker or a printed sleeve instead. This lets you use small quantities and change your design, and is often the sensible first step.
Designing on a cup
- Keep it simple. A cup is seen for only a few seconds.
- Use your logo on opposite sides, so that it can be seen wherever a customer holds it.
- Avoid placing detail near the rim or seam.
- Add your Instagram handle or a website so that people can find you again.
Environmental considerations
Most paper cups have a plastic lining and cannot go in normal paper recycling, even though they appear to be made of paper. Claims such as "compostable" need the right waste collection to make sense. Rules on single-use cups and on green claims also change over time, so check what applies before you print any claims on your cup. Offering a discount for customers who bring a reusable cup is something many cafes do, and that message would go well on a table talker.
Ordering
Tell us your cup type, your size, how many you get through in a month, and your budget, and we can suggest what makes the most sense. Artwork is set up free of charge when we print the job, and we can send you a visual proof. Printed cups are usually made to order and may take several weeks. Plan ahead, and consider stickers or sleeves in the meantime.
