Pavement signs that bring people in
A pavement sign, also known as an A-board or sandwich board, gives a shop a presence on the street, especially when the front is set back or hard to spot. Cafes, barbers, estate agents and salons along Mitcham Road and Upper Tooting Road all use them for daily offers and directions.
Types of A-board
- Poster frame boards have a snap-open or sliding frame, with a poster that you swap easily. This is the most flexible option for shops with changing offers.
- Printed boards have the design fixed permanently to the panels. They are simple, but you cannot change the message.
- Chalkboard or wipe-clean boards have a writable surface and can include a printed header with your logo.
- Spring-base swing signs are weighted and flex with the wind, which makes them good for exposed streets.
Common insert sizes are A1 and A0. Measure your frame's visible area if you already have one. We can supply inserts for your existing frame.
Inserts that last
Plain paper is not suitable for a street sign. We usually recommend non-tear or PVC inserts for outdoor use, and they are cheap enough to change with the season. For long-running messages, you might ask about a rigid Foamex panel.
What to put on it
People walking past have a few seconds. Good designs use big type and one offer: "Fresh coffee from £2", "Walk-ins welcome", or "Passport photos while you wait". An arrow is useful if you are around the corner. Leave a blank panel at the bottom if you want to add daily specials by hand.
The rules on pavement signs
A sign left on the public footway is an obstruction unless you have the permission of the council. Many councils have policies on A-boards, and some ban them outright, or restrict them to particular widths of pavement. It is your responsibility to check, and a sign should never block wheelchair or pushchair access. For Tooting, you will want Wandsworth Council's guidance. Our guide on pavement sign rules explains the basics.
Ordering
Tell us your frame size or ask us what we recommend, and send your logo and offer. We can lay out the artwork free of charge when we print. Inserts for standard frames from ready artwork are often a quick job, so you can usually get a new offer on the street without much of a wait.
Questions we hear about pavement signs
What size is a standard A-board poster?
A1 is the most common, with A0 for larger signs. Measure your frame's visible area before ordering.
Do I need permission for a pavement sign?
Usually, if it stands on a public footway. Rules vary by council, so check with your local authority before putting it out.
Which material should I use for outdoor inserts?
Non-tear or PVC posters are good choices, as ordinary paper will not last outside.
Can you print a poster for my existing A-board?
Yes. Measure the visible area and tell us the size, and we will print to fit.
