Your own Christmas cards
A personalised Christmas card stands out on the mantelpiece, and it is something people often keep. Families print their own photo cards. Businesses use them to thank clients and staff. Schools and charities sell them to raise money. We print short runs, so you can order just the number you need.
Family photo Christmas cards
A family photo is a simple way to share news with relatives who are far away. Choose a bright, sharp picture, ideally taken in daylight, and use the original file rather than a copy from social media. Keep backgrounds simple if you plan to add text across the photo. Popular options include:
- A single photo with a short greeting
- A collage from the year
- A folded card with a photo on the front and a family letter inside
- A funny picture with the family pet
Business Christmas cards
For a business, a card is a chance to thank people personally. Keep the wording warm, and consider including your logo on the back rather than on the front. Printing your company name inside helps people remember who it is from, and it leaves room for a signature. Printing "Season's Greetings" or a more general greeting can suit a diverse client list. Think about whether you would like to mention a charity donation in place of gifts, and be sure the charity is happy for you to do so.
Size and paper
A6 and A5 are the most common sizes, and square cards can look great. Remember that large or unusual sizes can cost more to post. Card of 300 to 350gsm feels right. Use an uncoated inner surface if you plan to sign by hand, because pens can smudge on gloss. If you are posting cards, order envelopes along with them. Printing your return address on the flap also saves writing each one.
Key dates
Christmas is a very busy time of year for printers, and for Royal Mail. It helps to plan in the following way:
- Early November: choose your design and photos.
- Mid-November: place your order and approve your proof.
- Early December: start writing and addressing your cards.
- Before the last posting date: Royal Mail publishes its Christmas posting dates, which are earlier for overseas cards.
We can often help with last-minute orders, including same-day printing on ready files, but it does get busier as Christmas approaches.
Ordering
Send your photo or logo and your wording, or come in and we will help you to set it up. Artwork set-up is free when we print the job. We will show you a proof to check for names, spellings and greeting. Check the list of people you are sending to, and order a few spare cards for those you forgot. Other gift ideas include photo mugs and calendars, which we can make from your same photos.
