How to print a document

  1. Get your file ready. A PDF is best, since the layout will not change. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, JPG and PNG files usually work too.
  2. Bring it or send it. Bring a USB stick or use your phone. To save time, you can send it on WhatsApp or by email before you arrive.
  3. Tell us what you need. Say how many copies, black and white or colour, single or double sided, and any stapling or binding.
  4. Check it and collect. Check the first page, pay and go. Small jobs can often be done while you wait.

Printing from your phone

Most phones save documents and photos in a way that makes them easy to send. Try these tips:

  • Open the email attachment or file on your phone, and save it as a PDF if you can.
  • Know how to log in to your email, your cloud storage or a government website before you arrive.
  • If a document is behind a password, download it first. We will never ask you for your personal passwords, and you should not need to share them.
  • Don't rely on a screenshot of a document if you can avoid it, as it can print with poor quality and may not be accepted for official uses.

Black and white, or colour?

Black and white printing is the cheapest option and is ideal for text-heavy forms and reports. Colour is better for charts, photographs and anything that needs to look professional. If only a few pages in a long document have colour, tell us: printing just those pages in colour may save you money. A4 is the standard, and we can also print A3 and larger. For posters and large plans, see poster printing and plans and CAD drawings.

Paper and finishing

Standard office paper is fine for most documents. A thicker paper makes CVs, reports and proposals feel better in the hand. Paper weight is explained in our guide to paper weights. Once printed, we can staple your document, or give it a proper finish with comb binding, wire binding or hardback binding.

Printing dissertations and university work

Please check your department's rules on margins, single or double sided printing, and binding before you print. Our dissertation checklist explains the common pitfalls. Allow extra time around hand-in dates, when many students need the same thing at the same time.

Privacy

Many of the documents we print include personal details. We only use your files to complete your order, and you can ask us to delete them when the job is done. See our privacy notice for details. If you are printing something sensitive, tell us and we will be careful about how we handle it.

How much does it cost?

Prices depend on the page count, whether it is colour or black and white, and the paper. Photocopying starts from 20p per page, as shown on our photocopying page. Printing from a file is similar in price, and we will always confirm the cost before we start. For long documents, ask for a quote, as we can usually offer a lower per-page price on larger jobs.

Same-day document printing

Most document printing is quick. Small jobs are often done while you wait, and larger reports can often be ready the same day. Phone 020 8133 4499 if you have a big job or a tight deadline, and we will let you know what is realistic. If you can't get to us, we can also post documents anywhere in the UK for a quoted charge.
